Is perfectionism inviting or hindering your progress?

Hi, Reader

Would you agree or disagree with this statement?

β€œEvery aspect of perfectionism is negative.”

I came across a statement to this effect when I was looking at articles in Psychology Today. It jarred me a little.

I’m certainly not the perfectionist I once was. But thinking back to those days, much of the intent behind my striving for perfection was well-meaning and heartfelt. Can you relate?

🌟 I loved the beauty of perfection in nature, like a pristine reflection of mountains on a lake.

🌟 I appreciate the refreshing calm of a perfectly organized, tidy room.

🌟 I delight in a well-organized plan, knowing someone has thought through the angles, the expected and unexpected ramifications.

The beauty of perfection is inviting and peaceful.

The ugly side of perfection fosters judgement, fear and guardedness.

As I worked through my ugly layers of perfectionism over the years, I began realizing what was rooted in my drive for completion and undeniable excellence. I discovered

  • a deep fear of being misunderstood and therefore rejected and dismissed before understanding could take place.
  • a drive to earn my way into relationships, grace and acceptance

Working through the messiness of meeting those deep needs of my heart, I began finding freedom to be genuine in my imperfections.

That's when I started seeing beauty in others' imperfections. It was so much easier to find relatability, to accept people on their journey rather than an 'arrival point', and to be my true self on my own journey.

My purpose-driven friend, as you work out the rhythms, decisions and kinks in your book or business journey, may you find beauty in both the perfect moments and the messy middles. Each are part of your story.

Cheering you on,
